Ukrainian Security Forces at the Uspenka State Border Destroyed a Military Convoy from Russia

Border and National Guard units stationed at Uspenka engaged and destroyed a convoy of Russian militia crossing into Ukraine on Saturday 23rd August 2014.

The border control detected a truck convoy of terrorists which had crossed the border from Russia and moved towards Lysyche settlement. The convoy was approximately 1.5 km at length and consisted of 2 BTR-80 armored personnel carriers, URAL and KamAZ trucks, armored vans and cars with St. George ribbons.

Ukrainian forces first shelled the convoy, at which time the convoy split with part moving towards BCP “Uspenka” by field roads.

The joint forces of the border guards and a National Guard detachment attacked this part of the convey. As a result of the battle over 20 military vehicles were destroyed and 26 militants (mostly of Chechen and Russian nationality) were killed. 2 wounded militants were captured.

Almost at the same time a National Guard detachment that was covering the Uspenka – Lysysche – Kalynove crossroad reported contact with the other part of the convoy.

Border guards moved to the said location in order to support the National Guard unit. At about 800 meters from Lysyche they found the convoy of militants and fired on it. Having destroyed a KamAZ with ammunition and several other vehicles, the guards withdrew to the forest belt to reload the weapons of their APC.

When the guards returned to their previous location, they were shelled with 82 mm mortars. However there were no losses among the Ukrainian forces. After enduring the shelling, the National Guard detachment and border guards then proceeded to attack and mop up the remaining Russian militia forces.
