An OSINT investigation by InformNapalm<\/a> has uncovered new evidence that the soldiers of the rocket battalion of the 18th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Southern Military District participated in the hybrid war against Ukraine. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The brigade belongs to the Military Unit 27777 in Khankala and Kalinovskaya, and in 2017 was reorganized into the 71st Motorized Regiment of the restored 42nd Division. We have found two previously unidentified Russian soldiers and found information about combat medals that they received for fulfilling special assignments, including participation in the Crimean occupation and the fighting in the Donbas.<\/p>\n

The starting point for the investigation was the photo of a group of artillerymen found in the social profile of Artur Basyrov.<\/p>\n

Artur Basyrov<\/strong><\/p>\n

Artur Basyrov was born December 5, 1991, in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan. He is a graduate of Tatarstan Cadet Corps of Nizhnekamsk School No. 11. He served his compulsory military service in 2010-2011. Since 2012, he served under contract in a reconnaissance unit of the 18th Brigade. In January 2014, he was a soldier in the command platoon of the rocket battalion of the same brigade. In April 2014 he was awarded<\/a> a medal \u201cFor the Return of Crimea\u201d by the Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n

A photo in Basyrov’s photo album, taken in December 2014, drew our interest. It was taken during his combat mission. In the photo, three Russian soldiers can be seen in front of the cab of a 2B26 vehicle (BM-21 MRLS on a KamAZ-5350 chassis). A white identification band can be seen on the left leg of the soldier sitting in the cab (his identity is discussed below). These bands were typically used by Russian soldiers and militants in 2014.<\/p>\n

Thanks to this photo, we could also identify the serviceman in the cab. It turned out he was an officer from the same unit.<\/p>\n

Alexander Timayev<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alexander Timayev was born September 10, 1989 in Kaltasy, Bashkortostan. In 2011, he graduated from Ekaterinburg Higher Artillery Command School. In 2012, he completed a one year course at the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy in St. Petersburg. Between 2012 and 2014 he was a lieutenant, commanding the 2nd firing platoon of the 2nd Rocket Battery in the Rocket Battalion of military unit 27777. As of May 9, 2015, he was a senior lieutenant. Besides the commemorative medal \u201cFor Participation in Military Parade\u201d, he was also awarded a medal \u201cFor the Return of Crimea\u201d and a Medal of Suvorov. These medals were awarded<\/a> to participants of the Crimean occupation and the fighting in the Donbas in the summer and fall of 2014. Currently he serves in the same battalion, presumably in the command unit.<\/p>\n

The following photo shows Alexander Timayev’s relative wearing his dress uniform coat with medals.<\/p>\n

The active profile of Timayev was thoroughly cleaned less than a day after the publication of the original article (archives of the page before<\/a> and after<\/a> the cleanup), likely by the demand of Russian security services. His album no longer contains any photos. But this is not a problem: if Timayev confesses and provides information on other war criminals in Crimea and the Donbas, InformNapalm will graciously offer him copies of all the photos he lost.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time we see evidence of the 18th Brigade\u2019s rocket battalion\u2019s presence in the Donbas. In February 2016, InformNapalm published evidence that Captain Ruslan Chafizov<\/strong> and other officers of this battalion – Ruslan Satdinov, Maxim Dubinin<\/strong>, and Anton Gareyev<\/strong> – fought in the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The 18th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, Military Unit 27777, has its base in Khankala and Kalinovskaya, Chechnya. Since 2017, this brigade has been reorganized into the 71th Motorized Regiment of the restored 42nd Motorized Rifle Division of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District. Along with the 18th Brigade, other brigades based in Chechnya were reorganized as well: The former 8th Mountain Motorized Rifle Brigade became the 291th Motorized Rifle Regiment, (military unit 65384 in Borzoy). The former 17th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade based in Shali became the 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment. The 42th Motorized Rifle Division also contains other units and will be completed by the end of 2017, according to milkavkaz.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We have found two previously unidentified Russian soldiers and found information about combat medals that they received for fulfilling special assignments, including participation in the Crimean occupation and the fighting in the Donbas.\r\n\r\nThe starting point for the investigation was the photo of a group of artillerymen found in the social profile of Artur Basyrov.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/wanted-3-.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<strong>Artur Basyrov<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ab-0-254x300.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"240\" \/>Artur Basyrov was born December 5, 1991, in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan. He is a graduate of Tatarstan Cadet Corps of Nizhnekamsk School No. 11. He served his compulsory military service in 2010-2011. Since 2012, he served under contract in a reconnaissance unit of the 18th Brigade. In January 2014, he was a soldier in the command platoon of the rocket battalion of the same brigade. In April 2014 he was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/URdKt\">awarded<\/a> a medal \u201cFor the Return of Crimea\u201d by the Ministry of Defense.\r\n\r\nIn social networks: Profile on <a href=\"https:\/\/vk.com\/id27139771\">VK<\/a> (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/uF5tG\">profile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/YTnZC\">albums<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/sHmrK\">contacts<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/b9mlA\">fotostrana<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ab-kadet-300x190.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" \/><img class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ab-vintorez-300x155.jpg\" width=\"306\" height=\"164\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/vureand-300x205.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"169\" \/><img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ab-37-07.04.2014-300x168.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\nA photo in Basyrov's photo album, taken in December 2014, drew our interest. It was taken during his combat mission. In the photo, three Russian soldiers can be seen in front of the cab of a 2B26 vehicle (BM-21 MRLS on a KamAZ-5350 chassis). A white identification band can be seen on the left leg of the soldier sitting in the cab (his identity is discussed below). These bands were typically used by Russian soldiers and militants in 2014.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ab-25-03.10.2014-Copy-1024x788.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\nThanks to this photo, we could also identify the serviceman in the cab. It turned out he was an officer from the same unit.\r\n\r\n<strong>Alexander Timayev<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/1-280x300.jpg\" width=\"212\" height=\"226\" \/>Alexander Timayev was born September 10, 1989 in Kaltasy, Bashkortostan. In 2011, he graduated from Ekaterinburg Higher Artillery Command School. In 2012, he completed a one year course at the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy in St. Petersburg. Between 2012 and 2014 he was a lieutenant, commanding the 2nd firing platoon of the 2nd Rocket Battery in the Rocket Battalion of military unit 27777. As of May 9, 2015, he was a senior lieutenant. Besides the commemorative medal \u201cFor Participation in Military Parade\u201d, he was also awarded a medal \u201cFor the Return of Crimea\u201d and a Medal of Suvorov. These medals were<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/LIsMo\"> awarded<\/a> to participants of the Crimean occupation and the fighting in the Donbas in the summer and fall of 2014. Currently he serves in the same battalion, presumably in the command unit.\r\n\r\nIn social networks: <a href=\"https:\/\/vk.com\/id274476385\">VK 1<\/a> (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/otbsM\">profile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/BhQFs\">album<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/qyvua\">contacts<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/vk.com\/id142028662\">VK 2<\/a> (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/LSH27\">profile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/A9mRP\">album<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/R8F7h\">contacts<\/a>) is inactive. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Xisey\">OK<\/a> inactive since September 2014, although it contains a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/iK8A8\">photo<\/a> from the same series that triggered this investigation.\r\n\r\nThe following photo shows Alexander Timayev's relative wearing his dress uniform coat with medals.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/3-nagradi-1024x698.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/at-v-kabine.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\nThe active profile of Timayev was thoroughly cleaned less than a day after the publication of the original article (archives of the page <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/otbsM\">before<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Ogvck\">after<\/a> the cleanup), likely by the demand of Russian security services. His album no longer contains any photos. But this is not a problem: if Timayev confesses and provides information on other war criminals in Crimea and the Donbas, InformNapalm will graciously offer him copies of all the photos he lost.\r\n\r\nThis is not the first time we see evidence of the 18th Brigade\u2019s rocket battalion\u2019s presence in the Donbas. In February 2016, InformNapalm published evidence that Captain <strong>Ruslan Chafizov<\/strong> and other officers of this battalion -<strong> Ruslan Satdinov, Maxim Dubinin<\/strong>, and <strong>Anton Gareyev<\/strong> - fought in the war in Ukraine.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Selection_201.png\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Selection_203.png\" \/>\r\n\r\nThe 18th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, Military Unit 27777, has its base in Khankala and Kalinovskaya, Chechnya. Since 2017, this brigade has been reorganized into the 71th Motorized Regiment of the restored 42nd Motorized Rifle Division of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District. Along with the 18th Brigade, other brigades based in Chechnya were reorganized as well: The former 8th Mountain Motorized Rifle Brigade became the 291th Motorized Rifle Regiment, (military unit 65384 in Borzoy). The former 17th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade based in Shali became the 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment.
