The letter was an online petition, which was signed by 177 Polish doctors (35 of them were not registered specialists, and 39 dentists). Similar to the case of Belgian doctors, reiterated in Lithuania through the Russian-language sources in October, the petition claimed there was no state of emergency and hence no need for strict measures against COVID-19, which, as the document said, are basically human rights violations. The letter also included such false and misleading messages as:

– undermining the number of deaths by quoting John Loannidis studies contrary to the WHO.

– vaccinating the elderly does not appear to be effective, as after the age of 75, the effectiveness is almost non-existent.

– wearing masks leads to brain hypoxia and accumulated CO2 translates into toxic acidification of the organism, which adversely affects immunity; moreover, some experts warn that the virus spreads better if the mask is not worn properly.

– asymptomatic people will not spread the virus.

– the government is introducing restrictions to tighten the ‘regime’.

A message undermining coronavirus effects was vivid in November: a special case of data manipulation appeared, according to which the number of COVID-19 infections was high due to false testing and wrong categorization of flu infections. Quotes by Dr. Zbigniew Martyka were shared broadly on different social media platforms.

False and misleading coverage concerning vaccination against COVID- 19 was noted in Poland along with the news on the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines by the EU and Poland.

- undermining the number of deaths by quoting John Loannidis studies contrary to the WHO.

- vaccinating the elderly does not appear to be effective, as after the age of 75, the effectiveness is almost non-existent.

- wearing masks leads to brain hypoxia and accumulated CO2 translates into toxic acidification of the organism, which adversely affects immunity; moreover, some experts warn that the virus spreads better if the mask is not worn properly.

- asymptomatic people will not spread the virus.

- the government is introducing restrictions to tighten the 'regime’.

Major messages related to the issue concerned the allegedly insufficient testing of the vaccine and potential side effects. One of the articles alleged that the vaccine can cause cancer, genetic mutations, and other unknown diseases.

“The current government does not care about your opinion, the opinion of Poles, they will carry out brainwashing through fear and terror, mainly the TVPinfo media, and will force the Polish nation to use the vaccine. “[...] We are not dealing with a vaccine, but with an RNA preparation that, according to many geneticists, will lead to genetic mutations in the person to whom this type of preparation will be administered. (…) This is how Mateusz Morawiecki cares about us, who together with his entourage wants to ‘vaccinate’ the nation.” Wolne Media, 14/11/2020

Baltic States and Poland

Within the monitored period, we found and analysed 6 articles (0.04 million potential contacts) with false and misleading content in Estonia (the number stood at 13 in October 2020), 17 articles (0.6 million) in Latvia and 45 in Lithuania (0.3 million; against 26 and 16 hits in the previous month, respectively), as well as 145 (5.6 million) in Poland.

The data from Poland was included into the report by Debunk EU on mis/disinformation on COVID-19 for the first time, hence no comparative analysis with regards to the country is available for the month of November 2020.

Throughout the analysed period, with the addition of Poland to the analysis, nczas.com, the website of the Polish far-right tabloid Najwyższy Czas!, founded by the controversial former MEP Janusz Korwin Mikke, topped the list of false/misleading coverage providers in the four countries as measured by mentions.
