Harmful narratives are being pushed to create a sense that NATO is using its smaller members as cannon fodder, the Alliance making up the \u2018Russian threat\u2019, and violating its promises not to expand in post-Soviet countries. According to the analysis carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debunkeu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Debunk EU<\/a>, in December, narratives focusing on military agenda of NATO outweighed the communication associated with political issues of the Alliance. Additionally, Baltic countries were often accused of their \u2018inadequate NATO defence spending\u2019 more than any other member state.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p id=\"viewer-dkspp\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">In December 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debunkeu.org\/post\/aggressive-and-breaking-its-promises-portrayal-of-nato-in-the-kremlin-controlled-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Debunk EU<\/a> detected 4615 articles related to NATO, which were posted by hostile media sources. Within the period, Debunk EU analysts reviewed 3136 articles with potentially harmful content, identifying 938 articles with false and misleading content from 97 media outlets. The articles had a potential reach of 989 million contacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-5is5l\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">The main distributors of NATO-related disinformation and misinformation in the Baltic countries in Russian and English languages were Kremlin-aligned media sources <strong>rambler.ru<\/strong>, <strong>ria.ru<\/strong>, <strong>tsargrad.tv <\/strong>and <strong>gazeta.ru<\/strong>. Out of all the content pieces analysed, disinformation was identified in 924 articles<strong> (29.46%)<\/strong>, while <strong>misinformation <\/strong>comprised only <strong>14 publications (0.45%)<\/strong>. Moreover, almost all the articles that mentioned NATO in December were identified as <strong>negative (99.6%)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-4m9bm\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">Throughout the monitored period, stories related to the NATO military and political agenda have received high trace in the Baltic information space, despite the media focus being mainly drawn to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disinformation flow targeting NATO in the Baltic countries sought <strong>high fluctuation<\/strong>, with up to <strong>five waves <\/strong>of increased number of articles published per month. High intensity of false and misleading content disseminated against the Alliance was mostly generated in relation to the <strong>external events<\/strong> that took ground in <strong>the Russian Federation <\/strong>and <strong>Belarus<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-au3tl\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">On average, <strong>approx. 30.3 false and misleading content pieces <\/strong>were identified per day. The highest rise of problematic information was observed on <strong>December 16th &#8211; December 18th<\/strong>, following the annual press conference of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. than the narrative placing second in the general distribution, and reaching at least <strong>958 million potential contacts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"viewer-fb8s0\" class=\"q2uC4 \u2018aggressiveness\u2019 and \u2018offensiveness\u2019 of the Alliance being pushed <strong>persistently <\/strong>throughout the whole month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-boluh\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">Moreover, compared with the general dynamics of information flow, there seems to be a <strong>correlation <\/strong>between the complexity of narratives used with the statements made by political figures of the Russian Federation and Belarus, resulting in official representatives of the country sustaining the role of initiators of false and misleading content on NATO, with the <strong>strategic application <\/strong>of digital media sources to further amplify hostile messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"viewer-1588k\" class=\"q2uC4 _3kAGd\">\n<div class=\"c-Mgr _2Mq66 _2Mq66 fs-0K _1JBlN _1JBlN\">\n<div class=\"_2o-_D image-container LPH2h\" role=\"button\" data-hook=\"imageViewer\">\n<div class=\"_3lvoN\" role=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">In terms of universal application, <strong><em>NATO is a threat<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>NATO is untrustworthy<\/em><\/strong> stood out as the narratives that contributed to <strong>the highest number <\/strong>of countries mentioned per false and misleading content piece. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-b7rbp\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\"><strong>Baltic countries <\/strong>were addressed with the narrative \u2018<strong>Inadequate NATO defence spending<\/strong>\u2019 more often than any other member states, with the primary focus paid on the questioning of NATO military capabilities strengthening in the region. The following sub-narrative was applied up to <strong>three times more <\/strong>often than any other sub-narrative and constituted <strong>602 mentions <\/strong>in total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-2e1h8\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">The following paragraphs include examples of hostile messages about NATO with explanations provided by Debunk EU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-c4crg\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\"><em><strong>NATO is preparing to invade Belarus<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\"><em>On December 2nd, during online session of CSTO Collective Security Council, leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko speaking about aggravating situation in the country pointed out to external factors, contributing to protests in Belarus. In his speech A. Lukashenko match the definition of \u2018hyperbolization\u2019 &#8211; seeking to <strong>falsely exaggerate <\/strong>and <strong>inflate <\/strong>regular military activity of NATO eFP and U.S. rotational forces in Lithuania and Poland, stationed for defensive and deterrence purposes. Apart from the reference to expert\u2019s opinion, no substantial evidence is given to back these comments on supposedly offensive behaviour of the Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-5vm0l\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\"><strong><em>NATO violated the promise given to USSR president M. Gorbachev in 1990<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\"><em>On December 17th, annual press conference of the president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin was held in Moscow. In a five-hours online session V. Putin claimed that Russia is \u201cwhite and fluffy\u201d and accused the West of sharing blame for deteriorating relations with Russia. V. Out of all the content pieces analysed, disinformation was identified in 924 articles<strong> (29.46%)<\/strong>, while <strong>misinformation <\/strong>comprised only <strong>14 publications (0.45%)<\/strong>. Moreover, almost all the articles that mentioned NATO in December were identified as <strong>negative (99.6%)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-4m9bm\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">Throughout the monitored period, stories related to the NATO military and political agenda have received high trace in the Baltic information space, despite the media focus being mainly drawn to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disinformation flow targeting NATO in the Baltic countries sought <strong>high fluctuation<\/strong>, with up to <strong>five waves <\/strong>of increased number of articles published per month. High intensity of false and misleading content disseminated against the Alliance was mostly generated in relation to the <strong>external events<\/strong> that took ground in <strong>the Russian Federation <\/strong>and <strong>Belarus<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-au3tl\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie ljrnk blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color _2QAo- _1iXso wj-V5 ljrnk public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">On average, <strong>approx. 30.3 false and misleading content pieces <\/strong>were identified per day. public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr PDkkw\">Moreover, compared with the general dynamics of information flow, there seems to be a <strong>correlation <\/strong>between the complexity of narratives used with the statements made by political figures of the Russian Federation and Belarus, resulting in official representatives of the country sustaining the role of initiators of false and misleading content on NATO, with the <strong>strategic application <\/strong>of digital media sources to further amplify hostile messages.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"viewer-1588k\" class=\"q2uC4 _3kAGd\">\r\n<div
