International volunteer group InformNapalm continues collecting information regarding the Russian Federation\u2019s actions in Syria. Earlier we informed that, thanks to the materials by the Russian special correspondents, the data on<\/strong>\u00a0an aviation group<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Russian pilots<\/a> that were on a \u2018military assignment\u2019 on the airbase in Latakia (Syria) was found. Despite that V. Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, once again<\/strong>\u00a0declared<\/a> on October 11, 2015, that Russia allegedly has no intention to meddle in the ground operation in this region, the events of recent days stated the opposite. Apart from the information about the\u00a0BT-82A armored personnel carrier published in the \u2018Russian Military Assignment from Novorossiysk to Syria<\/a>\u2019 article, InformNapalm\u00a0documented\u00a0the translocation\u00a0of the Russian heavy flamethrower systems to Syria.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An interesting piece of\u00a0information with the link to the Syrian sources\u00a0appeared in the\u00a0twitter account of Hassan Ridha<\/a> and later on the Russian propaganda\u00a0Internet resources<\/a>\u00a0on October 9, 2015. It demonstrated the transshipment of the TOS-1A\u00a0\u2018Solntsepyok\u2019 [Sunheat<\/em>] heavy flamethrower systems in Syria\u00a0<\/strong>with the help of semi-trailer Volvo trucks. It should be noticed that these\u00a0systems\u00a0had\u00a0the coloring typical to\u00a0the similar vehicles of the Russian military forces, also no side\u00a0numbers or other recognition signs were seen.<\/p>\n

In the context of this news,\u00a0other pictures of TOS complexes<\/a>\u00a0with desert coloring appeared on the net, but these were the\u00a0pictures of Iraqi flamethrower systems<\/a> delivered by Russia to Bagdad<\/a>\u00a0in 2014- 2015.<\/p>\n

Amidst\u00a0these events, the wikipedia<\/a> article got another line in the section with\u00a0the countries having in service\u00a0similar Russian systems (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iraq)\u00a0– now also\u00a0Syria got this equipment, which was justified by the recent news that \u201cTerrorists in Syria will be burned by \u2018Sunheat\u2019<\/a>“, thus partly \u2018legalizing\u2019 such weapon delivery (we underline here that the\u00a0Wikipedia article is based on an unofficial information).<\/p>\n

Taking into account that TOS systems are new for the Syrians and\u00a0they have never worked with it before, it would be reasonable to suppose that the personnel of the flamethrower systems will also be the\u00a0Russian servicemen. In this case the Russians will combine roles of instructors and crew members, showing the army of Bashar al-Assad all the particularities regarding exploitation and the combat use\u00a0of these systems.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s notice that\u00a0InformNapalm\u00a0team recently also received an insider information that\u00a0in\u00a0the 20th separate regiment of radiation, chemical, and biological protection<\/a>\u00a0(military unit No. 12102,\u00a0Western Military District,\u00a0Tsentralnyi settlement, Nizhny Novgorod\u00a0Oblast, Russia) a certain activeness regarding\u00a0preparation of a group of officers and contract specialists as well as vehicles and weaponry (including heavy flamethrower systems) for deployment\u00a0to Syria was noticed in the second half of September, 2015.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact that the 20th\u00a0regiment really experienced some hype and preparation was indirectly confirmed by the news from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation “WMD’s flamethrowers for the first time destroyed airborne descent of the simulated enemy with the salvo of\u00a0\u2018Solntsepyok\u2019\u00a0systems<\/a>”\u00a0dated on\u00a0September 30, 2015.\u00a0Even though the training was\u00a0listed as planned one the news run:<\/p>\n

“The tactical\u00a0training with heavy flamethrower\u00a0company\u00a0of the separate NBC protection regiment which involved\u00a0over 100 servicemen and over 20 armaments (including TOS-1A \u2018Solntsepyok\u2019 heavy flamethrower systems) just ended in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.\u00a0In the course of the drills the servicemen worked on their actions during march, loading the\u00a0heavy flamethrower systems, moving to positions, deployment\u00a0and target acquisition, moving\u00a0during the\u00a0combat\u00a0actions.\u00a0The flamethrowers launched\u00a0the 220-mm unguided rockets with thermobaric warheads\u2026\u00a0These are<\/em>\u00a0the first combat practices of\u00a0heavy flamethrower systems since the formation of the military unit <\/em><\/strong>in December, 2014″.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In addition to the insider information, studying the VKontakte\u00a0profiles\u00a0of the servicemen from the Nizhny Novgorod’s\u00a0NBC protection\u00a0regiment resulted in finding several pictures including the one of\u00a0the TOS-1A combat vehicle<\/a>\u00a0with the military unit’s vehicle park in the background. Also a picture of a tented \u2018KamAZ\u2019 truck with a \u2018Obama \u2013 schnook!<\/a>\u2019 sign was found in photo albums of\u00a0some servicemen<\/a>\u00a0from this military unit.<\/p>\n

Taking into account all mentioned above, a conclusion can be made that the recent preparations observed in the 20th NBC protection\u00a0regiment were apparently dealing with ‘the Syrian assignment’ of the military servicemen from this military unit. The vehicles noticed in Syria on October 9, 2015, seemed to belong\u00a0to\u00a0this regiment. There are\u00a0reasons to suppose that the moved to Syria Russian TOS \u2018Solntsepyok\u2019 systems based on T-72 tanks sooner or later will be given to the Syrian side (since the Russian army rearms with\u00a0TOSs based on T-90 tanks), but for a while the exploitation and combat use of these systems in Syria will be performed by the Russian soldiers.<\/p>\n

Note: separate NBC protection regiments within military districts and armed\u00a0forces of the Russian Federation began their formation in\u00a02014. New NBC protection units have been\u00a0already formed in some districts. This is the 20th\u00a0regiment in Nizhny Novgorod (WMD), 2 regiments are formed in Southern Military District (Republic of Ingushetia and the occupied Crimea), also 2 regiments are formed in Central MD, a\u00a0new regiment will be formed by the end of this year in Transbaikal area (Eastern MD). The typical structure of NBC protection military unit includes\u00a0squads of flamethrowers armed with RPO-A\u00a0<\/b>\u2018Shmel\u2019 portable rocket launchers\u00a0and also by TOS-1\u00a0<\/b>\u2018Buratino\u2019 heavy flamethrower systems and their\u00a0modernized version ‘Solntsepyok’.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Apart from the information about the\u00a0BT-82A armored personnel carrier published in the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/russian-military-assignment-from-novorossiysk-to-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russian Military Assignment from Novorossiysk to Syria<\/a>\u2019 article, InformNapalm\u00a0documented\u00a0the translocation\u00a0of the Russian heavy flamethrower systems to Syria.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nAn interesting piece of\u00a0information with the link to the Syrian sources\u00a0appeared in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sayed_ridha\/status\/652496395371343872\">twitter account of Hassan Ridha<\/a> and later on the Russian propaganda\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rusvesna.su\/news\/1444424989\">Internet resources<\/a>\u00a0on October 9, 2015. It demonstrated the transshipment of the <strong>TOS-1A\u00a0\u2018Solntsepyok\u2019 [<em>Sunheat<\/em>] heavy flamethrower systems in Syria\u00a0<\/strong>with the help of semi-trailer Volvo trucks.
