{"id":7931,"date":"2016-03-10T06:51:37","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T06:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/?p=7931"},"modified":"2016-03-14T09:04:35","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T09:04:35","slug":"mar10-google-shelling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/mar10-google-shelling\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Earth Unlocks New Secrets of &#8216;Over-the-Border&#8217; Shelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>InformNapalm international volunteer community continues to investigate the Russian Federation&#8217;s war crimes using the satellite images by Google Earth.<\/p>\n<p>In one of our\u00a0previous investigations (&#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/mar07-google-earth\/\">Google Earth Reveals the Secrets of the Machinery \u2018Captured\u2019 by the Terrorists<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;) we demonstrated\u00a0how the Russian equipment was transferred to the combat sites through the uncontrolled sectors of the Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n<p>The current investigation identifies weapon systems, firing directions, supply routes and the traces left after the shelling.\u00a0War crimes have no limitation period, so we will look at the map of the border area in September &#8211; October of 2014: satellite images of those areas keep many interesting details about shelling performed from the territory of the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian settlements of Marynivka, Pervomayskiy, Stepanivka and others in August, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting that exactly these settlements appear in the reports of terrorists and the Russian propagandists. For example, the published on the Russian resource Ruspravda.info article\u00a0with a cynical title &#8216;<em>Chronology of the civil war in Ukraine\u00a0as of\u00a0August 15, 2014<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0stated\u00a0that: &#8220;<em>The\u00a0supported by tanks\u00a0National Guard&#8217;s detachments conducted numerous attacks on Marynivka, Stepanivka, Pervomayskiy settlements. During heavy fights, the enemy having\u00a0vastly superior forces, was driven back to the previously occupied\u00a0position. Decisive counter attacks of militias inflicted on the foe the heavy losses in manpower and material resources.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Analysis of satellite images lets us judge about the exact\u00a0forces which were involved in operations in August of 2014.\u00a0Google Earth Images witness about not civil confrontation, but the military aggression of the neighbouring state.<\/p>\n<p>This is a screenshot of the satellite image from <strong>September 14, 2014<\/strong>. It registered a 6 pieces howitzer battery\u00a0(two combat platoons), ammo load positions, trucks and a tent. Disposition of the camp \u2013 to the east of khutor Primiusskiy, Kuybyshev raion, Rostov Oblast. The coordinates and the date are marked with green rectangle. Since the length of gun&#8217;s barrel equals the length of the truck, we can assume that these are <strong>2A65 &#8216;Msta-B&#8217; 152mm howitzers<\/strong>. Length of such gun&#8217;s barrel is 7200 mm.\u00a0For comparison,\u00a0length of a <strong>Ural-4320 truck<\/strong> is 7366 mm\u00a0and\u00a07960 mm\u00a0of a\u00a0<strong>KamAZ-5350<\/strong> truck. The barrel of <strong>D-30<\/strong>\u00a0gun\u00a0is 4660 mm long, so it would be much shorter than the truck.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_347.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21036\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21036 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_347.png\" alt=\"Selection_347\" width=\"1161\" height=\"674\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The old firing positions are located a little bit to the left. Interestingly, these positions can be seen in even earlier image from <strong>September 4, 2014<\/strong>.You can clearly see that there were 5 guns.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_349.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21040\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21040 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_349.png\" alt=\"Selection_349\" width=\"1161\" height=\"671\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s now check another picture dated on <strong>October 6, 2014<\/strong>. Here we can see the burnt and\u00a0trampled ground (<em><strong>upd: our readers have helped us to determine that the black spots in the picture\u00a0are the traces of MRLS firings performed from the same position, the direction of fire has\u00a0not been identified<\/strong><\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_348.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21037\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21037 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_348.png\" alt=\"Selection_348\" width=\"1158\" height=\"670\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Based on the direction of the barrel of one of the guns, we draw two lines (<em>please note the the map is rotated &#8211; the North indicator is in the top right corner<\/em>). The green one indicates the dead zone, the minimal shooting distance using the normal charge which is 6400 m. The red line is the kill zone, it&#8217;s from 6400 to 24700 m. Next we mark the\u00a0shell craters in close proximity to\u00a0the red line. For example, the published on the Russian resource Ruspravda.info article\u00a0with a cynical title '<em>Chronology of the civil war in Ukraine\u00a0as of\u00a0August 15, 2014<\/em>'\u00a0stated\u00a0that: \"<em>The\u00a0supported by tanks\u00a0National Guard's detachments conducted numerous attacks on Marynivka, Stepanivka, Pervomayskiy settlements. During heavy fights, the enemy having\u00a0vastly superior forces, was driven back to the previously occupied\u00a0position. Decisive counter attacks of militias inflicted on the foe the heavy losses in manpower and material resources.<\/em>\"\r\n\r\nAnalysis of satellite images lets us judge about the exact\u00a0forces which were involved in operations in August of 2014.\u00a0Google Earth Images witness about not civil confrontation, but the military aggression of the neighbouring state.\r\n\r\nThis is a screenshot of the satellite image from <strong>September 14, 2014<\/strong>. It registered a 6 pieces howitzer battery\u00a0(two combat platoons), ammo load positions, trucks and a tent. Disposition of the camp \u2013 to the east of khutor Primiusskiy, Kuybyshev raion, Rostov Oblast. The coordinates and the date are marked with green rectangle. Since the length of gun's barrel equals the length of the truck, we can assume that these are <strong>2A65 'Msta-B' 152mm howitzers<\/strong>. Length of such gun's barrel is 7200 mm.\u00a0For comparison,\u00a0length of a <strong>Ural-4320 truck<\/strong> is 7366 mm\u00a0and\u00a07960 mm\u00a0of a\u00a0<strong>KamAZ-5350<\/strong> truck. The barrel of <strong>D-30<\/strong>\u00a0gun\u00a0is 4660 mm long, so it would be much shorter than the truck.\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_347.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21036\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-21036 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_347.png\" alt=\"Selection_347\" width=\"1161\" height=\"674\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nThe old firing positions are located a little bit to the left. Interestingly, these positions can be seen in even earlier image from <strong>September 4, 2014<\/strong>.You can clearly see that there were 5 guns.\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_349.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21040\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-21040 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_349.png\" alt=\"Selection_349\" width=\"1161\" height=\"671\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nLet's now check another picture dated on <strong>October 6, 2014<\/strong>. Here we can see the burnt and\u00a0trampled ground (<em><strong>upd: our readers have helped us to determine that the black spots in the picture\u00a0are the traces of MRLS firings performed from the same position, the direction of fire has\u00a0not been identified<\/strong><\/em>).<a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_348.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21037\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-21037 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selection_348.png\" alt=\"Selection_348\" width=\"1158\" height=\"670\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nBased on the direction of the barrel of one of the guns, we draw two lines (<em>please note the the map is rotated - the North indicator is in the top right corner<\/em>). The green one indicates the dead zone, the minimal shooting distance using the normal charge which is 6400 m. The red line is the kill zone, it's from 6400 to 24700 m. Next we mark the\u00a0shell craters in close proximity to\u00a0the red line.
