Among them are militarization, another wave of reform of the Ground Forces, namely a return the divisions structure back from the brigades, transfer and deployment of new military units to the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. On the background of these preparations of the Russian army, the international volunteer community InformNapalm obtained information which indirectly corroborates the intelligence data. The activity of the Russian Federation is not just muscle-flexing but it looks like an earnest preparation for a full-scale military offensive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our open-source intelligence (OSINT) efforts yielded data on the creation and training of new structural units <\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong> Airborne Reconnaissance Companies (ARC) as parts of reconnaissance battalions of mechanized infantry (motorized rifle) units of the Russian army.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">These days we could not help but notice a curious peculiarity on some pages of Russian servicemen on social networks. Personnel of reconnaissance subunits of a number of mechanized infantry units of Southern and Central Military Districts have started to extensively use distinctive gimmicks and insignia of paratroopers &#8211; telnyashka striped singlets, buttonholes, streamers, tattoos and more. This could pass for the usual showing off of the Russian military. However after careful study of a number of sources, we discovered that a new type reconnaissance companies was being incorporated <strong>into reconnaissance battalions of infantry brigades.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Subject of study <\/strong>\u2014<strong>airborne reconnaissance companies (ARC\u2019s)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>ARC\u2019s, the new structural subunits of reconnaissance battalions, will be showcased in the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade (military unit #20634 from Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia). This brigade featured extensively in our investigations in the context of &#8220;Ukrainian assignments&#8221;. Contrary to our usual practice, this time we will refrain from making public the names of the soldiers, although <strong>they are known to us and are under special monitoring for further investigation<\/strong>. InformNapalm <strong>also has evidence of the presence of such ARC<\/strong><strong>\u2019s with other units of the Ground Forces of the Russian Army.<\/strong> We intend to publish these facts later. We are publishing here the documents from the pages of Russian servicemen used in our analysis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is a cover page of the \u201cExtended drill log of <strong>Airborne Reconnaissance Company<\/strong> of the Reconnaissance Battalion, military unit #20634\u201d. Take note that, in addition to the number of the field post of 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade, this picture features an \u201cAirborne Reconnaissance Company\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Selection_233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"972\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An extract from the order of the commander of the military unit #20634 from 2016 says: \u201cOn awarding the personnel with the distinction mark For Service in the Caucasus and award certificates\u201d. In the paragraph on the awarding soldier X, a scout-sniper of platoon N of the <strong>Airborne Reconnaissance Company<\/strong> of the Reconnaissance Battalion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Selection_234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"727\" height=\"961\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are other photos confirming the existence of ARC\u2019s within the 19th Brigade of Ground Forces, stationed in Vladikavkaz.<\/p>\n<p>The photo taken in the ARC barracks features three flags: Russian Federation, Reconnaissance Forces and Airborne Forces. Parts of insignia of these scouts of the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade are more common for paratroopers, e.g. buttonholes on arm-chevrons etc. Also there are photographs showing specific paratrooper training.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/6.-122-356-id207455547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"839\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2.-28-55-id322964428.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"193\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7.-129-356-id207455547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/y0-dBJiloxY.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1632\" height=\"976\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8.-13-41-xyligan1604.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"225\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/9.-39-41-xyligan1604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obtained data and photographs suggest that <strong>the training of airborne scouts of the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade is quite intensive and multidirectional. They make systematic field trips to Daryal mountain training range (54th Training Center for reconnaissance units) in North Ossetia to exercises in tactics, fire practice and mountain warfare. The specific paratrooper training of the infantry scouts runs on-site in Vladikavkaz, as well as in nearby Mozdok (the home station of the 100th Experimental Reconnaissance Brigade, military unit #23511) and at the training facility of 108th Air Assault Regiment of 7th Mountain Division of Airborne Troops (military unit#42091 in Novorossiysk), where the trainees perform rated parachuting tests from helicopters. Both contract and conscript soldiers are recruited for these companies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: The only mention in the Russian media of the new structural subunits of reconnaissance battalions of infantry brigades of the Russian Ground Forces was a brief abstract in <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/YX5bF\">Military-Industrial Courier of June 8, 2016:<\/a>: \u201cAt present, each combined arms brigade or division has separate reconnaissance battalions, which include armored reconnaissance companies <\/em><strong>as well as airborne reconnaissance companies for operations deep behind enemy lines\u201d<\/strong><em>\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Back to the USSR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/normal_42_123123123yiva.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"207\" \/>The emergence of ARC\u2019s is a very interesting twist in the history of the Russian army. It is known that the Soviet Army had a similar practice at reconnaissance battalions of many mechanized infantry divisions and brigades: infantry scouts received basic parachute training. The training was no match to the program for regular paratroopers, but still quite intensive. Some details of the ARC\u2019s training programs were described on one of the Russian <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/KNGl5\">forums<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEvery mechanized infantry (or tank) division had a separate reconnaissance battalion. They included the 1st, 2nd reconnaissance companies and 3rd airborne reconnaissance company as well as separate platoons. The ARC consisted of two air assault platoons and a platoon of special reconnaissance. All of them received some paratrooper training and earned to wear parachutist badges on their infantry or tank unit uniforms. In some battalions, ARC\u2019s wore regular paratrooper uniforms. They demobilized in the paratrooper uniform with telnyashkas and berets; they celebrated on August 2 (Airborne Forces Day) &#8220;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to information from the same source, as of 2013, the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade (military unit #21005, Yurga, Kemerovo region) gave paratrooper training to the personnel the reconnaissance battalion and of reconnaissance companies of mechanized infantry battalions in Tolyatti and in Irkutsk at the training facilities of Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) special forces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: <a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/\">IN<\/a> volunteers have repeatedly reported on the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade in connection with the \u201cUkrainian assignments\u201d. Its tactical groups participated in the Donbas events during the turning point of the battles in favor of Russia in the summer and autumn of 2014. Individual contract servicemen of 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade were also \u201cworking part-time\u201d for the illegal armed groups of Luhansk People\u2019s Republic (LPR):<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/74th-russian-separate-motorized-rifle-brigade-in-russian-presence-donbas\/\">74th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade \u2014 Another Proof of Russian Presence in Donbas<\/a> 2014-11-07<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/the-russian-74th-brigade-s-contract-servicemen-fight-in-donbas-as-hooligans\/\">The Russian 74th Brigade\u2019s Contract Servicemen Fight in Donbas As Hooligans<\/a> 2015-10-09<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The introduction of the new airborne reconnaissance companies into mechanized brigades indicates further <strong>shift towards more aggressive military doctrine on the part of the Russian Federation and preparation for interventions in the territory of neighboring states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Urgent and massive militarization of the Russian Federation, including creation of new purely offensive hybrid reconnaissance and assault subunits is driven by the imperialist ambitions of the Russian leadership currently waging wars in Ukraine and Syria. However, the appetite of Kremlin&#8217;s politicians is much greater.\u00a0The current military reform provides for massive reinforcement of the subunits of this type both in terms of quantity and quality. Reconnaissance battalions of the Ground Forces will be significantly reinforced, thus made more independent of the other structural units of the Armed Forces. While regular reconnaissance companies operate on armored personnel carriers and armored cars, new ARC\u2019s will be operating from helicopters, including by parachuting. Air Forces of the Southern Military District already have 36 Mi-35M and 27 Mi-8AMTSh helicopters that can fly at night and at low altitude.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/jul28-valuyki-base-invasion\/\">Valuyki as a Special Operations Base: Evidence of Preparation for Invasion<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Although new ARC\u2019s are rather recon than assault units, supposed to do support work for particular units of the Ground Forces, we can conclude that mechanized infantry brigades are now getting their own \u201cscout paratroopers\u201d capable of being air-dropped or air-landed behind enemy lines for the deep recon and\/or capturing of terrain as part of larger-scale offensive operations of main forces, as well as for sabotage and subversive ops.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These companies could also be attached to special operations forces. Among them are militarization, another wave of reform of the Ground Forces, namely a return the divisions structure back from the brigades, transfer and deployment of new military units to the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. On the background of these preparations of the Russian army, the international volunteer community InformNapalm obtained information which indirectly corroborates the intelligence data. The activity of the Russian Federation is not just muscle-flexing but it looks like an earnest preparation for a full-scale military offensive.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>Our open-source intelligence (OSINT) efforts yielded data on the creation and training of new structural units <\/strong><strong>-<\/strong><strong> Airborne Reconnaissance Companies (ARC) as parts of reconnaissance battalions of mechanized infantry (motorized rifle) units of the Russian army.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">These days we could not help but notice a curious peculiarity on some pages of Russian servicemen on social networks. Personnel of reconnaissance subunits of a number of mechanized infantry units of Southern and Central Military Districts have started to extensively use distinctive gimmicks and insignia of paratroopers - telnyashka striped singlets, buttonholes, streamers, tattoos and more. This could pass for the usual showing off of the Russian military. However after careful study of a number of sources, we discovered that a new type reconnaissance companies was being incorporated <strong>into reconnaissance battalions of infantry brigades.<\/strong><\/span>\r\n<h2><strong>Subject of study <\/strong>\u2014<strong>airborne reconnaissance companies (ARC\u2019s)<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nARC\u2019s, the new structural subunits of reconnaissance battalions, will be showcased in the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade (military unit #20634 from Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia). This brigade featured extensively in our investigations in the context of \"Ukrainian assignments\". Contrary to our usual practice, this time we will refrain from making public the names of the soldiers, although <strong>they are known to us and are under special monitoring for further investigation<\/strong>. InformNapalm <strong>also has evidence of the presence of such ARC<\/strong><strong>\u2019s with other units of the Ground Forces of the Russian Army.<\/strong> We intend to publish these facts later. We are publishing here the documents from the pages of Russian servicemen used in our analysis:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>This is a cover page of the \u201cExtended drill log of <strong>Airborne Reconnaissance Company<\/strong> of the Reconnaissance Battalion, military unit #20634\u201d. Take note that, in addition to the number of the field post of 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade, this picture features an \u201cAirborne Reconnaissance Company\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Selection_233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"972\" height=\"966\" \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>An extract from the order of the commander of the military unit #20634 from 2016 says: \u201cOn awarding the personnel with the distinction mark For Service in the Caucasus and award certificates\u201d. In the paragraph on the awarding soldier X, a scout-sniper of platoon N of the <strong>Airborne Reconnaissance Company<\/strong> of the Reconnaissance Battalion.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Selection_234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"727\" height=\"961\" \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nHere are other photos confirming the existence of ARC\u2019s within the 19th Brigade of Ground Forces, stationed in Vladikavkaz.\r\n\r\nThe photo taken in the ARC barracks features three flags: Russian Federation, Reconnaissance Forces and Airborne Forces. Parts of insignia of these scouts of the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade are more common for paratroopers, e.g. buttonholes on arm-chevrons etc. Also there are photographs showing specific paratrooper training.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/6.-122-356-id207455547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"839\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2.-28-55-id322964428.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"193\" \/><img class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7.-129-356-id207455547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"195\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/y0-dBJiloxY.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1632\" height=\"976\" \/>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8.-13-41-xyligan1604.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"225\" \/><img class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/9.-39-41-xyligan1604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"227\" \/>\r\n\r\nObtained data and photographs suggest that <strong>the training of airborne scouts of the 19th Motorized Rifle Brigade is quite intensive and multidirectional. They make systematic field trips to Daryal mountain training range (54th Training Center for reconnaissance units) in North Ossetia to exercises in tactics, fire practice and mountain warfare. The specific paratrooper training of the infantry scouts runs on-site in Vladikavkaz, as well as in nearby Mozdok (the home station of the 100th Experimental Reconnaissance Brigade, military unit #23511) and at the training facility of 108th Air Assault Regiment of 7th Mountain Division of Airborne Troops (military unit#42091 in Novorossiysk), where the trainees perform rated parachuting tests from helicopters. Both contract and conscript soldiers are recruited for these companies.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<em>Note: The only mention in the Russian media of the new structural subunits of reconnaissance battalions of infantry brigades of the Russian Ground Forces was a brief abstract in <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/YX5bF\">Military-Industrial Courier of June 8, 2016:<\/a>: \u201cAt present, each combined arms brigade or division has separate reconnaissance battalions, which include armored reconnaissance companies <\/em><strong>as well as airborne reconnaissance companies for operations deep behind enemy lines\u201d<\/strong><em>\u2026<\/em>\r\n<h2><strong>Back to the USSR<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<img class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/normal_42_123123123yiva.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"207\" \/>The emergence of ARC\u2019s is a very interesting twist in the history of the Russian army. It is known that the Soviet Army had a similar practice at reconnaissance battalions of many mechanized infantry divisions and brigades: infantry scouts received basic parachute training. The training was no match to the program for regular paratroopers, but still quite intensive. Some details of the ARC\u2019s training programs were described on one of the Russian <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/KNGl5\">forums<\/a> in 2013.\r\n\r\n<em>\u201cEvery mechanized infantry (or tank) division had a separate reconnaissance battalion. They included the 1st, 2nd reconnaissance companies and 3rd airborne reconnaissance company as well as separate platoons. The ARC consisted of two air assault platoons and a platoon of special reconnaissance. All of them received some paratrooper training and earned to wear parachutist badges on their infantry or tank unit uniforms. In some battalions, ARC\u2019s wore regular paratrooper uniforms. They demobilized in the paratrooper uniform with telnyashkas and berets; they celebrated on August 2 (Airborne Forces Day) \"<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<strong>According to information from the same source, as of 2013, the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade (military unit #21005, Yurga, Kemerovo region) gave paratrooper training to the personnel the reconnaissance battalion and of reconnaissance companies of mechanized infantry battalions in Tolyatti and in Irkutsk at the training facilities of Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) special forces.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<em>Note: <a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/\">IN<\/a> volunteers have repeatedly reported on the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade in connection with the \u201cUkrainian assignments\u201d. Its tactical groups participated in the Donbas events during the turning point of the battles in favor of Russia in the summer and autumn of 2014. Individual contract servicemen of 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade were also \u201cworking part-time\u201d for the illegal armed groups of Luhansk People\u2019s Republic (LPR):<\/em>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/74th-russian-separate-motorized-rifle-brigade-in-russian-presence-donbas\/\">74th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade \u2014 Another Proof of Russian Presence in Donbas<\/a> 2014-11-07<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/the-russian-74th-brigade-s-contract-servicemen-fight-in-donbas-as-hooligans\/\">The Russian 74th Brigade\u2019s Contract Servicemen Fight in Donbas As Hooligans<\/a> 2015-10-09<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nThe introduction of the new airborne reconnaissance companies into mechanized brigades indicates further <strong>shift towards more aggressive military doctrine on the part of the Russian Federation and preparation for interventions in the territory of neighboring states.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>Urgent and massive militarization of the Russian Federation, including creation of new purely offensive hybrid reconnaissance and assault subunits is driven by the imperialist ambitions of the Russian leadership currently waging wars in Ukraine and Syria. However, the appetite of Kremlin's politicians is much greater.\u00a0The current military reform provides for massive reinforcement of the subunits of this type both in terms of quantity and quality. Reconnaissance battalions of the Ground Forces will be significantly reinforced, thus made more independent of the other structural units of the Armed Forces. While regular reconnaissance companies operate on armored personnel carriers and armored cars, new ARC\u2019s will be operating from helicopters, including by parachuting. Air Forces of the Southern Military District already have 36 Mi-35M and 27 Mi-8AMTSh helicopters that can fly at night and at low altitude.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<em>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/informnapalm.org\/en\/jul28-valuyki-base-invasion\/\">Valuyki as a Special Operations Base: Evidence of Preparation for Invasion<\/a><\/em>\r\n\r\n<strong>Although new ARC\u2019s are rather recon than assault units, supposed to do support work for particular units of the Ground Forces, we can conclude that mechanized infantry brigades are now getting their own \u201cscout paratroopers\u201d capable of being air-dropped or air-landed behind enemy lines for the deep recon and\/or capturing of terrain as part of larger-scale offensive operations of main forces, as well as for sabotage and subversive ops.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>These companies could also be attached to special operations forces.
