
Nazi command gave an order to mine and destroy the ancient Polish city of Kraków to stop the advance of the Soviet Army. Yevhen Bereznyak, a schoolteacher from Dnipropetrovsk, was commander of a reconnaissance unit of the 1st Ukrainian Front in 1944. Yevhen and his unit got the mining maps and saved Kraków… to celebrate the Victory day in the NKVD filtration camp.
The Government of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance created videos telling stories of outstanding Ukrainians in the WW2. Directed by Oles Sanin. The project videos are based on the footage of the Central State Cinema Archive of Ukraine named after Gordiy Semenovych Pshenychnyi, British Pathé, Crimean ATR TV Channel and the personal archives of Akhtem Seitablayev, 1+1 TV Channel, Espresso TV Channel and the National Museum of the Great Patriotic War.
