“For Dad from Ostap”

on 03/04/2015 | | Main News | News Print This Post Print This Post

Many volunteers help the Ukrainian Army. Kharkiv resident Roman Donik is one of them. This is his post on Facebook.

The Dad is Stanislav Kovtun, a paratrooper of the 25th brigade, who went to war as volunteer in the first days of the war and heroically died at Ilovaisk. He died covering the retreat of our troops and was posthumously awarded the order “For Courage” of the third degree.

Ostap is a little Ukrainian. A Man. Only 1 year and 9 months old. He still does not understand and does not know that his dad was killed.

His Mom, Grandma and Grandpa are raising him as a real man, a warrior of good and a son of a hero.

Ostap is the future of Ukraine.

He already has something to be proud of. He will always have something to be proud of. There is someone to look at and to take example from. He will always know that his dad was killed defending a just cause and the independence of Ukraine.

He was born in one country and will live in a different one. The one that his father has died for. The one that his family defends. The one that he will be building.

I know for sure that none of our guys will die in vain, if we don’t make it so. It depends only on us what kind of new generation of Ukrainians will grow up in this country.

There are different ways to look at the war. There are different ways to look at the death of the defenders of Ukraine.

I am proud to be acquainted with the people who, despite the bitterness of the loss, do not get discouraged but get determined and continue to do things that their sons, brothers, or husbands haven’t finished.

I am proud that I am Ukrainian.

“For Dad from Ostap” is written on the truck that was given as a gift [by Ostap’s family].

This GAS 66 truck has already been repaired twice after being damaged on the frontline.

Of course with a slogan like this,  it would be more glorious to install at least a NSV heavy machine gun or, even better, ZU-23 anti-aircraft cannon on the truck and liberate Donetsk with it.

But life dictates its own conditions and the daily war has quite different realities.

Originally, we were going to install six washers and dryers on the truck. Then the real war started and we lost so many vehicles that we had to use anything to haul food or ammunition. So, this truck was used to transport personnel, supplies, and ammunition.

Twice it found itself under fire, but not fatally.

It is protected by God, little Ostap and his family.
