It appears that our previous concerns have some grounds: the Russian military command is gathering a new group in Belgorod Oblast of Russia aimed at Kharkiv Oblast of Ukraine. In particular, a base camp of Russian troops has been found in the northwestern suburb of Belgorod, where, at the moment, several units have been identified.
We have identified a combined unit of the 23rd Motor Rifle Brigade of the Central Military District (military unit #65349, located in the city of Samara). Inform-Napalm reported about its transfer to Belgorod Oblast on February 20-24 (see ref. below). The combined unit of the 23rd Brigade is a battalion-tactical group (BTG) consisting of up to a battalion of motorized infantry equipped with BTR-82A personnel carriers, mortar squads (2S9 Nona mortar based on BTR), anti-aircraft gunners (9K33 Osa air defense missile system), scouts, snipers, and auxiliary support personnel.
In addition to the BTG of the 23rd Brigade, a self-propelled artillery unit (2S3 Akatsiya 152 mm self-propelled howitzer) has been noticed, presumably from the 7th Tank Brigade of the Central Military District, military unit # 89547, located in the town of Chebarkul, Chelyabinsk Oblast (information needs to be confirmed). Tankers and gunners from this brigade were seen with the Rostov group invasion forces in autumn of 2014 (see ref. below).
Information about other military units seen in Belgorod and Voronezh Oblasts of the Russian Federation will be presented as it becomes available.
Note: This is not the first so-called “Ukrainian assignment” of the 23rd Motor Rifle Brigade. About a year ago, combined Units of the 23rd Brigade from Samara was transferred to southern Russia. Some of its soldiers were lucky enough to take part in the capture of Crimea. From May to October 2014, the BTG of the 23rd brigade was deployed to October District of Rostov Oblast, from where they launched raids into Donbas. https://informnapalm.org/3979-yuzhnaya-komandyrovka-23-j-omsbr
