Yesterday, February 10, after the shelling of civilian neighborhoods of the city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk Oblast by the Russian mercenaries, the servicemen of the local detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine helped to evacuate children from the orphanage “Hayok” to a safe place.
The border guards have been supporting orphans of this asylum for quite a long time. They contacted the orphanage administration immediately after the shelling. They were informed that the kids had been hiding in the basement for more then an hour and were very frightened, so the administration of the orphanage wanted to take them from Kramatorsk to a safer place. The servicemen headed to the orphanage at once to help with packing and escort. The whole operation was organized in a short time as the contigency plan for the case had been discussed beforehand. While adults were packing things, some of the kids recognized several border guards as they had previously met. “I remember you. You visited us on Saint Michael’s day,” said one of the kids.
Overall, 29 children age 4 to 7 years old and the adult personnel were escorted to safety.
